I have always been into fashion. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I have seen my fair share of the trends that have come and gone. Yes, I rocked a side pony and bangs and crimped my hair. I also donned overalls and Doc Martens with a black, velvet chocker. Some of the trends from the past make me cringe, but others that have come back into style are making me nostalgic in a good way and I am loving the way the old styles are being reimagined today. Here are some of the 90s fashion trends that I am here for and support!
#1 Neon and Tie Dye
I would be lying if I said I am not fully obsessed with the tie-dye trend once again. I am also loving all of the neon color blasts that are coming back in subtle ways. Although I don’t think I would put the two together a la Clarissa Explains It All, but I do love to add a pop of neon or a tye-dye accent to my wardrobe. I only wish puff paint came back in style because I loved making those!
#2 Biker Shorts
I was reluctant to get back on the biker short trend. Unlike what a lot of stylists say, they are NOT flattering on all! I could never wear a head to toe biker short outfit like Kelly Kapowski in Saved By The Bell but I do think a biker short is great to work out in during the crazy hot summer months and also with a cute sneaker and oversized graphic tee for a laid back daytime outfit.
#3 Small Bags and Fanny Packs
Clueless is a 90s classic and Cher Horowitz was my style icon for a good chunk of my high school years. Who else wanted those coordinated checkered skirt suits she classically wore? Another trend Cher made famous was the small bookbag trend of the 90s. Although I have not given in to the bookbag trend again (I see all those LV ones around), I have been influenced to get back on the fanny pack train. Nowadays, they are referred to as belt bags, which makes them seem less “touristy” and I love the way they have been styled cross-body rather than around the waist. These bags are truly versatile, especially for busy moms on the go!
#4 Babydoll Dresses
I am all for anything flowy and comfortable and that’s why I still love the babydoll dress trend. I never really let this one go and I am happy to see it coming back in more modern patterns. Not that the girls from Beverly Hills 90210 didn’t rock their floral baby doll dresses, but sometimes too many flowers are too much, ya know! Many retailers are redesigning the babydoll dress trend and adding hints of neon or black and white prints to make this 90s themed trend work today.
#5 Oversized Blazer Jackets
Heathers was my absolute favorite movie of the 90s. I could watch that movie over and over again. The “Heathers” were always on point with their fashion choices, including the blazer trend. Although I will not be accepting shoulder pads into my wardrobe anytime soon, I am all for the oversized blazer look. It doesn’t have to be just for work anymore, I love pairing a blazer with distressed denim and a flat shoe for a date night or adding a blazer to a mini dress for a polished look.
Here are ways to incorporate these 90s trends today:
